How Much Should a Contractor Spend on Meta Ads?
A practical framework for determining the right Meta ads budget for your contracting business based on job value, target cost-per-lead, and capacity.
There is no single right answer to how much a contractor should spend on Meta Ads — but there is a framework that gets you to a defensible number for your business. The right budget depends on three things: your average job value, your target cost per lead, and how many jobs you can actually take on.
Start with your average job value. If a booked job is worth $5,000 to your business and you close one in four qualified leads, each qualified lead is worth roughly $1,250 in revenue. That sets the ceiling on what you can profitably spend to acquire one. If your target cost per lead is $40, you need roughly 31 leads to land one job — and your ad spend per job is around $1,250. That math has to work before you scale.
Next, look at capacity. If your crew can handle 10 more jobs a month and your close rate is 25%, you need 40 qualified leads a month. At a $40 cost per lead, that's $1,600/month in ad spend. If you want to grow faster, you scale the budget — but only after the lead-to-job conversion is proven. Spending more before the funnel works just burns money faster.
Most service businesses need a minimum of $1,500–$3,000/month in ad spend to generate consistent lead volume and exit Meta's learning phase. Below that, the algorithm doesn't have enough data to optimize, and costs per lead stay high. Once a campaign is profitable, scale gradually — 20% budget increases every few days — so you don't reset the learning phase and spike your costs.
The mistake most contractors make is setting a budget based on what they're comfortable spending rather than what the math requires. Run the numbers first: job value, close rate, target cost per lead, and capacity. Then set the budget that delivers the lead volume you can actually convert. That's the budget that works.
